All three record at the same time, each to its own video file, with a live preview of each along the top of the screen. The iPhone can only run so much camera hardware at once, so Interrotron starts at 4K and steps down until every camera fits, keeping the highest resolution for the cameras facing the subject. Measured on iPhone 17 Pro:

Each take is recorded upright for the way you're holding the phone when you press Record.

Video formats

HEVC, H.264 and, on iPhones whose encoder supports it (tested on iPhone 17 Pro), ProRes 422 (Proxy, LT, 422 and HQ). ProRes files are very large and easy to edit: a 4K ProRes 422 stream runs at about 560 megabits a second. In a short test on iPhone 17 Pro, three ProRes 422 streams recorded at 30 fps with no dropped frames.

Microphones

With AirPods connected, Interrotron records the iPhone's stereo microphone and the AirPods microphone together, each to its own 48 kHz, 24-bit file. If the AirPods are in when Interrotron opens, it records them from the start. Put them in later and Interrotron switches its recording over by itself (it uses the AirPods' connection events, so it needs Motion & Fitness, asked when the app first opens).

Without AirPods, it records three of the iPhone's microphone beams at once: omnidirectional, front-facing and back-facing.

A level meter shows every microphone live. The AirPods track runs about a tenth of a second ahead of the iPhone track (a Bluetooth delay difference), so slide it into line when you edit.

AirPods relay

Interrotron can play either microphone into an AirPod while it records: the AirPods mic and the iPhone mic each go to the Left AirPod, the Right AirPod, or Off. Every routing tap is spoken into both AirPods. Each relayed microphone has its own Sensitivity (lifts quiet or distant speech without making loud speech painful) and Volume (for anyone who needs it louder), and a bar showing what the AirPod is receiving. These settings only change what you hear: the recordings are untouched. See Interviews.

Takes

Each take is a folder holding every camera's video, every microphone's audio and a summary of what was recorded. Tap a file to play it. Long-press to share it, or share or delete a whole take. Recordings stay on your iPhone (and in its backups) until you share them.
